The ensemble > Schweres Wasser < was founded by the singer Martina Scharstein in Schwerin in 2023. A scholarship from the MUSIKFONDS within the framework of the NEUSTART KULTUR made the foundation possible.
After 20 years as a singer, performer and co-manager of the internationally renowned vocal ensemble <belcanto> Dietburg Spohr-Frankfurt, which united specialists of contemporary a capella singing, the artistic director again works with her Schwerin musician colleagues and artists. Furthermore, young artists such as graduates of the Schwerin Design School are supported. The digital transformation is tangible. The ensemble explores the artistic-musical variety of expression possibilities and topics of the present time and brings them to an open-minded audience. Humorous approaches certainly arise - the audience is also allowed to participate interactively. The framework of a concert is thereby playfully transcended.
"Culture is not a luxury, but a necessity to build cohesive, equal, sustainable and free societies."
(President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen)
The composition "Neue H2O-Musik" by the Schwerin composer Reinhard Lippert, first performed in 2001, inspired the unusual name of the ensemble.
From a New Year's conversation with a chemistry lecturer friend (University of Bremen), the singer learned about the concept of "heavy water". Fascinated by this hitherto unknown element, she drew a mental line from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany's most water-rich state, to the Baltic region and the Scandinavian countries with which cultural exchange and partnership are planned.
The basic theme of water also includes a sustainable rehearsal and tour concept as well as thematic references to climate change and the European Green Deal.

Heavy water
Deuteriumoxid
Chemically, heavy water (deuterium oxide) is water with the molecular formula D2O. It differs from "normal" water with H2O in that the "normal" hydrogen atoms of protium (symbol H) have been replaced by heavy hydrogen atoms of the isotope deuterium (symbol D). It thus has a higher mass, density, melting and boiling points. In nuclear reactors it is used as a cooling agent (better than H2O).
D2O is used to monitor the activity of microorganisms under extreme conditions, e.g. deep in the sea in ocean bottom sediments. D2O is thereby fed into their metabolism and incorporated into the biomass. The invisible can be made visible.
Heavy water tastes sweet, it slows down biological reactions. Is heavy water therefore a fountain of youth?
